Suet and Other Wild Bird Foods

Wild Birds are easily attracted to alternative foods such as Suet, Fruits, and Table Scraps.

Suet...
Suet is made from the fat that surrounds beef kidneys. It is an inexpensive by-product that is available at butcher shops. This high energy food is a wonderful addition to the winter diet of wild birds.

Woodpeckers love suet... as do many other birds such as Nuthatches, Wrens, and Chickadees to name a few.

Commercially processed suit cakes are the best choice for hot weather feeding as homemade suet can spoil quickly. Suet should be fed in a suet feeder that is either hung from something or attached to a wall, tree, fence or the like.

Homemade suet should only be put out in small amounts during the summer months to keep it from spoiling.

Fruits...
Many birds such as Robins and Bluebirds love fresh fruit. Try attracting them with cut up apples, melons, raisins,  and grapes placed in a tray feeder. Orange halves are also a favorite. Some birds even like grape jelly.

Table Scraps...
Many birds including Jays love left over hard or stale bread. Just make sure its not moldy. Tear up your left-over bread into small pieces and scatter it on your tray feeder. Squirrels and Raccoons love leftover bread too!
