Wild Bird Nesting Materials

Nesting is a very busy time of year for our feathered friends. In addition to finding food and water... during nesting season wild birds must find nesting materials and a suitable nesting site to bring up their young.

Many man made nesting materials are a favorite of wild birds for either building or lining their nests. Here's a list of items that can be set out in the yard during early spring.

  • Collect a stack of small twigs and place them in strategic locations around your yard. Wild birds will use the twigs for the frame of their nest.
  • If you're cutting back dormant ornamental grasses from the previous growing season... leave a small pile of grass leaves for the birds.
  • Those of use with dogs have a never ending supply of dog hair in the spring. Wild birds love to collect groomed out dog hair for their nests. Just brush your dog outdoors and leave the fur laying on the ground.
  • Thin strips of cloth about 1/2" wide and 4" to 6" long.
  • Lint from your clothes dryer is a good source of soft and light nesting material.
  • Cut up used dryer sheets work well too!
  • Cottony pillow stuffing materials.
  • Yarn cut in 4" to 6" sections. Don't cut the yarn to long as it may tangle the fledglings.
  • Hair from your hair brush.
  • Feathers from an old wore out down jacket.
  • Fur from the collar of old coats.
  • Paint brush bristles from an old paint brush.
  • Strings from old mop heads.

Don't forget about the birds that like to make a nest from mud. Keep a muddy section in your garden for the mud loving wild birds. If you don't have a garden you could make some mud in a trash can lid and keep it moist during the nesting season. Robins, Wood Thrushes, Phoebes and Swallows will thank you for the mud!
