If there are Hummingbirds in your area... they're easy to Attract by Feeding

Hummingbirds are considered the F16 of the bird world. These beautiful little birds are swift... displaying their incredible acrobatics with every flight. There's something about a hummingbirds "hum" that no other bird can match.

Attracting humming birds with nectar rich garden flowers, or offering hummingbirds an artificial nectar at a feeding station is a sure way to lure them close to your home.

How to Attract Feeding Hummingbirds

Hummingbirds have very basic needs. If you supply them with their needs... you'll have no problem attracting them.

Hummingbirds and their need for nectar...
Hummingbirds need a constant supply of nectar to support their high metabolisms. The majority of their energy is spent flying, so hummingbirds need to feed constantly. They can consume 50% to 75% of their body weight each day feeding on nectar, small insects, and pollen. Insects and pollen provide hummingbirds with protein, while nectar supplies them with energy.

Hummingbird Feeders...
Hummingbird feeders are available in a wide assortment of shapes and styles. Brightly colored red feeders are the most popular and highly favored by hummingbirds.

Hummingbird feeders need to be refilled every other day. They should be cleaned with hot soapy water with each fill. With this in mind you'll want to select a feeder that is easy to disassemble and clean.

Hummingbird feeders should have bee guards covering each of the feeding ports. Bee guards are simply a small plastic like screen with openings large enough for the hummingbirds beak... but small enough to keep bees and wasps from getting to the nectar. Bee guards also keep bees from getting inside the feeder and drowning in the nectar solution.

Placement of your Hummingbird feeder...
Most birders prefer to place hummingbird feeders on or near windows. This enables one to watch the hummingbirds up close without disturbing them.

It's best to place hummingbird feeders in shady locations to keep direct sunshine from overheating the nectar.

When to set out Hummingbird Feeders

When to set out and remove Hummingbird feeders...
Knowing when to set out a hummingbird feeder is easy. At the first sound of a hummingbirds "hum"... its time to set out your feeders. Hummingbirds will usually arrive just before garden flowers and wildflowers have begun to emerge... so they'll be happy to find your feeders.

Hummingbirds have excellent memories and will remember where you put your feeders last year.

When to remove hummingbird feeders is a different story. Some say to take down the feeders at the first sign of cold weather. This discourages hummingbirds from hanging around to long and sends them on their usually migration. Others say to leave hummingbird feeders out until the hummingbirds have left the area.
