Here's the only Hummingbird Nectar Recipes you'll ever need!

Home made Hummingbird nectar is very easy to prepare. It takes little time... and the recipe is less expensive than commercial packaged formulations of nectar.

Never use Honey or Red Dye!
Even though people substitute honey for sugar... never add honey to your hummingbird nectar recipes. Honey ferments to quickly. During the fermentation process a fungus can develop in the honey which can be fatal to hummingbirds. Artificial sweeteners and synthetic sugars should not be used either.

Red Dye in not necessary to add to the hummingbird nectar. The bright red colors of the feeder is enough to attract hummingbirds.

Home made Hummingbird Nectar Recipe

In a small sauce pan bring 4 parts water and 1 part sugar to a boil. Boil for 1 to 2 minutes stirring constantly.

Allow the hummingbird nectar to cool to room temperature before filling the hummingbird feeders. Any left over nectar can be stored in the refrigerator.

Hummingbird Feeder Tips

  • If you know the approximate date that your hummingbirds migrate back to your area... set your feeders out a couple of days before they arrive.
  • If you don't know the approximate arrival date... set your feeders out when you hear the first hummingbird.
  • Place hummingbird feeders out of direct sunshine if possible.
  • Hummingbird feeders should be cleaned every two days during warm weather... and with every refill.
  • Hummingbird feeders can be let out well into the fall. Take your feeders down after you no longer see any hummingbirds coming to them. Leaving your feeder until fall will provide migrating hummingbirds with a high energy food source as they pass thru.
