If you can't beat them... Join them

Squirrels are opportunistic feeders. They are always looking for an easy meal. One of the best ways to keep squirrels from wasting expensive bird seed is by feeding them.

Place Squirrel Feeders far from Bird Feeders

The first step in trying to keep squirrels from feeding on your expensive wild bird seed... is to place squirrel feeding stations as far as possible from your bird feeders.

Squirrels will soon learn that if they have a plentiful supply of food in their own area... they'll leave bird feeders alone.

Feeding Squirrels

What to feed Squirrels...
Remember that squirrels are opportunistic feeders! If its easy get... most likely they will eat it. Some of their favorite foods include:

  • Nuts - Acorns, Peanuts either in or out of the shell, and nearly any other kind of nut.
  • Fruit - Both fresh and dried. Apples and berries can be found growing wild so their a favorite.
  • Sunflower Seed - Buy the cheap stuff for squirrels
  • Bread Products - Left over stale or old un-moldy bread, biscuits, crackers, etc.
  • Dried Garden Beans - Peas and Green beans
  • Table Scraps - Hard boiled and scrambled eggs, fresh vegetables, old tortillas.
  • Suet - Squirrels love peanut butter based suet.

Squirrel Feeders

Choosing a Squirrel feeder...
There are only a couple styles of commercially manufactured squirrel feeding stations available... Hoppers, and Corncob feeders.

Hoppers
Hoppers are either made from wood or metal. Most have feed level windows and a hinged lid. They are easily mounted to trees, deck rails or walls with two screws.

Squirrels access the food inside by learning to lift the lid to get to the food. This type of feeder is quite efficient as the squirrel has to work for the food, feed can't be scattered, and its protected from the elements.

Corncob Feeders
Corncob feeders are available in two styles. Platform feeders, Merry-Go-Round feeders.

Platform feeders are nothing more than a small shelf that mounts to trees, deck rails, or walls with a couple of screws. The feeding platform has one or more large screws protruding thru the top that corncobs are screwed into. This type of corncob feeder is really easy and inexpensive to make in the home workshop.

Merry-Go-Round Feeders
Merry-Go-Round feeders are a fun feeder that accepts 3 or more whole corncobs. They are mounted by a center pivot point to trees, walls, fences, or deck rails.

Its a lot of fun to watch squirrels feeding at Merry-Go-Round feeders. With a choice of 3 or more corncobs they never Know which one to get. These feeders are very efficient. If the squirrel lets go of the cob... the Merry-Go-Round rotates and the squirrel has start all over again at catching a cob.
